LA TORRE DEL RELOJ
Cultural attractions / Chiclana de la Frontera
Description
Known to the locals as the Arquillo del Reloj, this is one of the best known buildings in Chiclana. Built in the 18th century, it was originally part of a local government building.
Given that the nearby St. John the Baptist Church did not have a bell tower, this tower was used for that purpose. The tower is built of piedra ostionera (a sedimentary rock formed from eroded seashells and coral) and has four main parts: the round base with an archway which provides access to the square. The main structure where the clock mechanism is housed, the octagonal bell tower and a dome topped with a wrought-iron Latin cross.
Located in Chiclana´s Plaza Mayor or Town Square, it is, together with the Church of St. John the Baptist, a beautiful monument of great interest for visitors.
