Between the El Camarón beach all the way to Las Tres Piedras, there are a series of interesting coastal dunes. These natural sand reservoirs feed into the beaches along with longitudinal dunes which are home to a number of interesting and extraordinarily adaptable plant species, able to withstand adverse environmental conditions such as the salinity from the sea.

Many migrating bird species find refuge in the coastal dunes´ vegetation—birds that cross the Strait of Gibraltar every year to their winter home in warmer climes. Reptiles also find the perfect habitat for survival amongst the dunes, including snakes, geckos, ocellated lizards, skinks and most importantly, the common chameleon, found in significant numbers in areas around Chipiona and where pioneering efforts have been made to protect the species. There is also a Nature Interpretation Centre named after the chameleon, located in three traditional thatched-roof buildings which house permanent exhibitions and areas for the study and analysis of the chameleon.

The Costa Ballena-Chipiona coastal green belt known asCorredor Verde, covers 1,2 km of coastal ecosystems visible from an elevated boardwalk, allowing pediestrians to enjoy the area´s outstanding natural landscape.
