When talking about farming in Rota, you have to know the word mayetería which means “field work done by the local farmer, known as a mayeto.”

Mayetos have always devoted themselves to farming and harvesting the very best produce from their small plots of land. The time-worn image of the mayeto, bent over and sweaty, as he collects the fruit of his hard work in the month of May, lives to this day.

The origin of the mayeto´s dwelling is similar to that of the archaic barraca commonly found on the Levantine coast, used by vegetable growers of Muslim origin.

The dwelling´s thatched roof makes it cool in summer and warm in winter and is always built facing south in order to ensure maximum light as well as protection from cold, northerly winds. Only a few mayeto dwellings survive to remind us of the identity of this local farming community.
