Built in the 13th century upon the remains of an ancient Muslim ribat or fortress-religious residence, the castle´s design is attributed to Alfonso Pérex de Guzmán, also known as Guzmán el Bueno. In order to reward him for his heroic defence of Tarifa, Guzmán was given lordship over all the towns and land lying between the Guadalquivir and Guadalete Rivers.

It´s rectangular floor plan has five battlement towers and a central courtyard flanked by two colonnades. A series of Gothic-Mudejar paintings have been recovered on the floor skirtings.

The castle was once residence to Ponce de León and there is also evidence that the Catholic Monarchs stayed here during their visit to Rota.

The fortress is a powerful symbol to the residents of Rota, proof of this being that it bears the town´s Coat of Arms and currently serves as its Town Hall.
