The Cathedral of Jerez began its construction in 1695 on the former premises of the Major Mosque of Jerez, becoming first San Salvador Church and later elevated to the rank of Cathedral in 1980.

The outer bell tower was most probably built on the minaret of the old mosque. The rectangular temple has 5 naves upon a Latin cross structure. As head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Asidonia-Jerez, it is the epicentre of the city´s religious celebrations. Highlights include its central and lateral naves covered with ribbed vaulting.

The central nave and domed transept is richly decorated in perfect harmony and balance with its monumentality. Zurbarán´s Virgen Child is the Cathedral Museum´s artistic masterpiece.
