The “old” Villamarta Theatre dates back to 1928. Built under the initiative of the Marquis of Villamarta, it maintained its activity (under private management) until June, 1986, when it finally closed its doors.

The idea of a “new” Villamarta Theatre came from the firm proposal of the Jerez Town Council to provide a public infrastructure for promoting music and the performing arts in order to ensure that all Jerez´ citizens have access to cultural activities. It is also another fantastic selling point for Jerez´ promotional stategies for tourism.

The Villamarta project to become a public municipal theatre includes ongoing, top- quality programming of classical, contemporary and flamenco music and dance in addition to opera and Zarzuela (traditional Spanish operetta). Its seasonal productions and series carry extraordinary importance, including two highly prestigious international events, the Festival de Jerezand the Centro Lírico del Sur.

In summary, the Villamarta Theatre offers performances of one kind or another over 200 days a year, thereby creating ongoing opportunities for attracting new audiences and for promoting the city and its culture to visitors.
