The museum is located in the Barrio de San Mateo, one of the six parishes into which the old Islamic part of town was divided by Spain´s King Alfonso X, known as The Wise King, in 1264.

The current facilities, which surround three inner courtyards, form this large compound covering approximately 3,200 square metres. The main core of the permanent exhibition is located in a small palace dating from the late 18th century.

It follows the local design of a house with inner courtyards, copied on a smaller scale from Baroque palaces.
